Abstract
[Purpose]
Elderly patients are at high risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) due to use multiple drugs and decreased physiological function with aging, it is necessary to inspect inappropriate drugs in elderly patients carefully. Drug Utilization Review (DUR) is a system that checks and evaluates whether drug use is properly performed, and inappropriate drugs in elderly patients are drugs that require attention in the use since they may increase the frequency of ADRs in the elderly. This study investigated the patterns of inappropriate drugs in elderly patients filtered through the DUR.

[Methods]
This study retrospectively collected data on inappropriate drugs in patients aged 65 years or older filtered through the DUR system of Chosun University Hospital from January 2021 to March 2021. Variables analyzed demographic characteristics of the study subjects, inappropriate drugs in elderly patients.

[Results]
Of the total 1180 people, 593 were women (50.3%), and 587 were men (49.7%), the subjects’ average age was 75.9 ± 6.9 years old. Prescriptions of inappropriate drugs in elderly patients were mostly anticholinergic drugs (763), followed by tricyclic antidepressants (239), and long-term benzodiazepines (178). Among the anticholinergic drugs, chlorpheniramine (53.6%) and dimenhydrinate (13.5%) were most commonly prescribed, and clonazepam (74.1%) and diazepam (19.6%) were prescribed for long-term benzodiazepine drugs. Of tricyclic antidepressant drugs, the prescriptions of amitriptyline (77.4%) and nortriptyline (26.9%) was the most prescribed.

[Conclusion]
In this study, as inappropriate drugs in elderly patients, anticholinergic drugs were mostly prescribed, and the prescriptions of chlorpheniramine, dimenhydrinate, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, clonazepam, and diazepam took up a large proportion. This data may be used collect information of ADRs, and could be utilized in elderly patients’ medication counseling, ADRs monitoring, and screening for fall risk drugs.
